Going beyond the formulaic - Won’t Get Fooled Again: Opinion/Argument Writing K-3 – Learning to Form Opinions by Laura Guevara Use technology and teach writing! Besides all the different activities teachers use everyday in the classroom, 21st century teachers must use technology to teach and guide the writing process at early stages. Learn to navigate using your laptop as a tool to prepare your lessons and keep students involved in the writing process. Dont forget to bring your laptop! 4-7 – Learning to writing argumentatively by Andrea Alvarado/Kathleen Cohen Join us for a morning of opinion writing. Examine the process of developing and expressing opinion from class and small group discussion, organizing and writing an opinion piece and moving toward argument writing. Included will be important components of opinion writing: know your audience, build your position, look at both sides, justify and rebut. We will also cover catchy intros, useful transitions and honest conclusions. 8-12 – Writing for Urgency and Justice by Mike Tinoco In this workshop, participants will explore strategies for teaching students meaningful, relevant argumentative writing. Using a culturally and socially responsive framework, this workshop will emphasize the importance of treating students lives as primary texts—that is, validating and addressing urgent and real issues occurring in students lives, school, and community.
