Saving Lincoln On this date in 1856, Abraham Lincoln and Owen Lovejoy addressed a meeting of Marshal County Republicans in Lacon, IL. The crowd was estimated at 2,000. Owen Lovejoy was a lawyer, minister, abolitionist, and "conductor" on the Underground Railroad. After his brother Elijah Lovejoy was murdered in November 1837 by a pro-slavery mob, Owen became the leader of abolitionists in Illinois. He was later a U.S. Congressman.
