Saving Mr. Banks. Emma Thompson, Tom Hanks. 2013. I must be living right....two decent films in a row! Go figure. This is the true story of how Walt Disney tried to get the rights to make the book Mary Poppins into a movie. It took him almost twenty years, because the author, an Australian woman who lived in England, simply did not want Hollywood to ruin it. But, as time moved on, and the book stopped selling, she found herself needing some cash and eventually agreed to meet with Walt. This was surprisingly a very sweet movie....you have Emma Thompson, a typical English woman who was firm, strict and haunted by a less than positive childhood, and Tom Hanks who played Disney. The movie was done well, by the way, constantly flashing back to the authors childhood, so we could get a feel as to what caused her to be the way she was. Done very effectively, too. The film eventually was made in the early 60s, and went on to bring in megabucks starring Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews. I think I went to see it with my family, if I remember correctly. Who did you go with? This film was fun, and you should probably check it out.
