Saving Tweety - grab a cup of coffee and sit for a moment- this may just be worth it... Yesterday, dressed and ready for work, Tweety ready to be carried to her new foster home (my friend Jodi), she was sitting on the ledge inside by the screen on my porch in her cage to enjoy the view. She had already been fed and in our care for two and a half days. Wildlife people - not returning calls and one I spoke with said it was too late - we should have never fed or touched her. Usually after a few hours and being around humans, the community abandoned them. I heard a lot of noise on the porch and looked out to see a black bird HANGING onto the screen (by tweety) screeching and holding a huge juicy worm. I ran and grabbed the cage and with rubber gloves placed her in the grass - literally praying the mom would feed her. Within seconds, the mom flew around her and finally landed by her and miraculously FED her. She did this several times. Again, according to experts, this was impossible after two days of being cared for my humans. I put her in an abandoned nest Jodi Shaver had given me and placed that in a bucket with extra pine straw in it so that the mom could land on the edge and get to it. We placed the bucket in a bush and in no time the mom and other birds were feeding and protecting her. All day and into the evening - Tweety, all alone in her own nest and bucket, was cared for. Late last night, a very insightful friend who knew all the efforts and time (my sweet boss who let me come in late) the kids, Jodi and I went to, very sweetly said to me, this was not really about saving Tweety, it was about saving you... Ill take it a step further and say, its about saving all of us who find ourselves in a place we never planned on - by accident or the selfishness of others, at one time or another, we all need saving... And God who watches over the sparrow, watches over us... We may be temporarily displaced, but we are NEVER alone - what an incredible lesson from a little bird... :)
