Saw “12 Years a Slave”. Good movie, but depressing. Though I would like to Thank the woman who loudly stormed out the theater screaming because she could not take it anymore. That was entertaining. What I would love to see are movies or maybe a miniseries done with the same detail that covers the period 1865 – 1994. This is the time period that I feel is currently most misunderstood. It is the era when slavery ended but racism remained legal throughout the United States. The last blatantly racist law did not leave the books until 1994 (feel free to correct me on that end date). It would be interesting to see the impact of this in the work place, neighborhoods and home depicted in detail on the screen. I feel it is often forgotten that laws are part of what shapes the culture and attitudes. And of course beliefs and attitudes are in turn what creates the laws. So, even after slavery was outlawed the beliefs remain in the psyche of Blacks, Whites and Others and is passed through the generations. The laws support the attitudes, the attitudes support the laws and that helps support a racist culture. This and more is incorporated into new policy and everyday interaction. Oddly enough the show “Mad Men” does an excellent job of depicting this. It gives insight into the roles of Women and Blacks in NYC corporate culture as well as people’s feelings and actions towards these and other marginalized groups.
