Saw American Hustle with Iwona on Sunday and We really liked it. I think it is a movie that conservatives should like, especially if they shares Tom Sowell s view about the two visions. The character played by Christian Bale was very much someone who follows Sowells view of the vision of the benighted, a vision of limits and the value of small things. Yes, he is a con man but looks at who he targets and you see a kind of sense of justice, albeit a bit self serving, but one with a sense of limits. Contrast this to the young arrogant FBI agent (played perfectly by Bradley Cooper and who reminded me of the character played by DiCaprio in the Wolf of Wall Street), who is a morality tale of the abuse of power by petty small souled men. The comment Bales character about what was needed after the pain of Watergate was not the path of getting everyone who was crooked or corrupt, but to restore the people faith by postives means. Also the story of the mayor, played by Jeremy Renner (from Hurt Locker) is a sad story in that he was caught in the change of political landscapes. He was a 19th century politician in the post-Watergate world. Yes, he engaged in graft but it wasnt for himself or his family but for his community, very much in the mode of Mayoe Curly of Boston old as caught in the book and film The Lost Hurrah. It reminded me of my favorite mayor, Buddy Cianci of Providence, whom the Feds went after.. only to get him the first time on an assult charge. He rebuilt the City of Providence from being a mini Bronx of the 60s-70s into a city often listed as one of the most liveable cities in the US. It reminds me of Plunkett of Tamney Hall, and the phrase honest graft which is very much tied to majority rule large scale governments.
