Saw God Help The Girl. This is an overly self-aware, precious, - TopicsExpress

Saw God Help The Girl. This is an overly self-aware, precious, whimsical, sentimental, self-indulgent, indie-pop infused movie musical. The enjoyment of a musical typically relies on how good the songs are and how they are integrated with the story. For the most part, the songs and the story are hit or miss. There were some scenes that tried to be genuinely insightful, but there are also moments in this film that were simply embarrassingly eye-roll worthy. This movie also had a very melancholic tone throughout, but thankfully brightened up when the three primary actors were together on screen. Emily Browning, Olly Alexander, and Hannah Murray, were a good ensemble to root for here. This movie is based on the self-titled album of an actual God Help The Girl band, which is a spin-off project from the band Belle & Sebastian, who writer/director Stuart Murdoch is actually from. Despite the inherent flaws God Help The Girl has, and the limited target audience it caters to (Hipsters!), I was admittedly still charmed by it.
