Saw Gone Girl, David Finchers newest flick tonight, and really - TopicsExpress

Saw Gone Girl, David Finchers newest flick tonight, and really enjoyed it. Its about an obnoxiously good looking and envy-producing dream couple, only the wife suddenly disappears under suspicious and apparently violent circumstances on the day of their anniversary. As the police investigate this incident, layers upon layers of their married life are slowly peeled back, causing us to constantly reassess what we think of them, and, in particular, the nearly perfect-appearing husband (played by Ben Affleck). The real theme of the movie is how little, ultimately, people resemble the image that the world holds of them, and of the secrets that lurk just below the surface in all of us. We are, in reality, a swirling vortex of conflicting thoughts, desires, and motivations that we reflexively seek to hide from the worlds harsh judgments through the images that we subtly conspire to project. If people arent what we have come to believe them to be, then what are they? If our social perceptions arent to be trusted, then what is? And if they arent as good as we thought, then does that make them evil... or just as weak and grasping as we see ourselves. Gone Girl really is a good, taught, well-paced mystery, that keeps us guessing about the true nature of the characters and the facts that are slowly presented to us. As always, Fincher gives us a great look, and takes pains to keep us from getting too comfortable with our judgments. It keeps us on our toes, and wanting to know more.
