Saw Inside Llewyn Davis today. The Coen brothers bring us another evocative look at a place and a time, this time the Greenwich Village folk music scene of the early 1960s. Oscar Isaac does a fine job singing and playing his guitar as he portrays a totally insufferable character, who is nothing more than a moocher and chronic complainer. Supposedly playing for the art, refusing to sell out, he ignores opportunities that arise, preferring to stick with the status quo. The supporting cast is fine, with Carey Mulligan and Justin Timberlake very solid. And John Goodman gives his usual terrific performance playing a bizarre jazz musician. This is a well-executed film that is difficult to like. Its no surprise the awards givers have not been kind. Based on your age and familiarity with the time and the music, you may really like it or find it a little self-indulgent. And both attitudes may be right.
