Saw Selma today. A few things about it: (1) I wish my dad and my grandparents had lived to see the first black president of the United States. (2) my paternal grandmother went to the march on Washington even though my grandfather thought it might be a bit dangerous. Shes one of my heroes. She taught me a lot about being a human being (3) going to see Selma with my mom and aunts was really what made the experience special and important. I was born in 1969, the year after MLK was assassinated. My parents generation was part of the change MLK pioneered. Those ladies (from both sides of my family) sat in that theater sniffling, tears streaming. MLK history is their story. We have to continue to pass the torch of change and courage. It flickers and wanes way too often now. Time to burn and blaze more trails.
