Saw a charming little film on Netflix streaming while I was waiting to be edited. Its Mike Mills 2010 ``Beginners. Its a quiet little film about a 38-year-old graphic artist who is dealing with the death of his father. Christopher Plummer plays the father, a man who late in his 70s comes out as a gay man and finds a whole new life and happiness (including the gorgeous Goran Visnjic as a boyfriend). The artist, played by Ewan McGregor, has managed to sabotage his romantic relationships until, about two months after his fathers cancer death, he meets a French actress at a costume party. She has laryngitis, so their initial verbal interactions are all one-sided. A Jack Russell terrier plays a key part in the story and even has a few lines (given in subtitles). Its funny, I remembered this film as having been in black and white, but when I looked at the trailer, it is in color. I think my misperception comes because there is such a period feel and pace to the movie. McGregors love interest is played by Melanie Laurent, who has an ethereal beauty. She is as cautious about commitment as McGregor is. I rather doubt this movie got wide play when it was released. Its a little bit on the subtle side. It has an ``R rating, although I cant really imagine why. Certainly one sees things that are far more explicit on prime-time TV these days. All in all, its a sweet little film, definitely worth looking for on Netflix or wherever else one goes to find movies that are not first-run. Heres the trailer: https://youtube/watch?v=A0o9430ZcSA
