Saw an older lady, at the gas station...probably in her early to mid 80s, and wearing an armband from her chemo treatment. She was COVERED with tattoos... I mean, COVERED. With the exception of a butterfly, on her left shoulderblade, the rest of the tattoos were of cartoon characters. With her being in a tank top and shorts, and us being side-by-side at the pumps, I felt obliged to say something... so I asked her about her ink. She explained to me that she got her first ink... a vintage cartoon character of Mickey Mouse... in memory of her father, who died in World War II. She was still rather young, when he died, and one of her favorite childhood memories was of him taking her to see a movie with a Mickey Mouse cartoon at the beginning, and how he had laughed so hard. She went on to tell me about other tattoos... each one was a popular cartoon character, during the time she got it, and signified a significant event in her life. Betty Boop (on the calf of her left leg) signified her own birth... she said her nickname was Boop, because her mother thought she bore a resemblance to the wide-eyed cartoon belle. Donald Duck, on her left arm, represented her graduation...in fact, the tabs on his cap were replaced by a graduation tassle in her school colors. There was Dopey... he marked the year her younger brother was born. Tinkerbell, on the other arm, marked the year he was killed (in the Korean War). Jiminy Cricket represented their little sister. A dalmation pup represented one of her children... a My Little Pony, one of her grandchildren... and, lo and behold, a Spongebob welcomed in a great grandchild. Ive heard people talk about how ridiculous these people with massive ink will appear, when they are old. However, after spending some time listening to this ladys stories about her body art, I couldnt help but enjoy it.
