Saw the Nick Cave documentary 20,000 Days on Earth last night at St. Anthony Main and really enjoyed it, what a well done doc on a guy whose music can be a little... inscrutable. Through chats with his collaborators, including Kylie Minogue, which he conducts while driving around his home of Brighton, England, and stories he tells while sitting on a couch to a psychologist, he discusses his life, career and creative choices in a vulnerable way that sits somewhere between matter-of-fact and profoundly poetic. I loved his description of seeing a gum-chewing, contentious, and antagonistic Nina Simone perform and the transformation she made onstage and I loved his analysis of the creative process, especially when discussing collaboration and the way ideas transform and become better when you bring them to someone else. Id have liked to see him do a driving or dinner chat with PJ Harvey was my only minor quibble. I made a point not to read the reviews of Emily Hooper Brooke Aldridge Simon Calder J Evan LeFreak before posting so now Im off to read those.
