Saw the comments by Microsofts CEO that women dont have to ask for pay raises they should just trust that the process works. Well its good to know that Microsoft has a process for evaluating employee performance and giving their staff pay raises as they go without having to ask for them or demonstrate by keeping track of their performance and showing their boss and personnel office that they deserve a pay raise based on not only job performance but how their job performance compares to their job description as to what they were hired to do versus what they were assigned to do by supervisor or had to do to ensure the projects they managed got completed. It is not that way in other places where software is written such as the division I went to work for in 1987 for the University of Washington which was then named Academic Computing Services where I was warned right away I would have to keep track of my own performance and bring same to the attention of my supervisor to get regular performance evaluations and raises as they did NOT have a regular system for evaluating employee performance and providing for raises or for anything other than COL increases so if I was assigned anything more that what my job description entailed I would have to document it and bring it to the attention of my supervisor so it could be considered as a change in my job description and addl pay added as warranted. Okay so I was warned. My job as a planner was diverse as I had evaluate our computing services compared to our peer Universities and make recommendations or provide the material our director needed to justify budget increases and changes in our services. In addition I had to work with individual academic units to help them develop computing plans as well as survey other academic computing users such as students in University housing to determine their needs and how they could best be met and other duties related as assigned by the director who had me fill in for the assistant director in his absence monitor the bulletin boards and help staff a development project which I was a gigantic failure at which was write documentation for northwest net which the University had the contract to do which my director assigned me to work on in addition to my planningprojects knowing it was way outside my area of expertise and something I was not familiar with at all and had a mental block about due to it being writing which anyone who knows what it is like to be a Yakama tribal member goes thru since we have no written language alphabet or anything like that and communicating in English is termed the borrowed language. So I did not do well on this assignment as not only did I planning analyst I have to write the introduction to the document without help I had to help edit it and decide whether or not to include as appendixes documents referred to in the text which I decided to do and no one told me well that stupid they can loook it up on the Internet so dont include the whole thing. But my thinking was what if they cant get to the Internet? Maybe that document will help if our instructions or our access goes down they can still use this information to get help getting back on to the Internet and get their work done. Anyway I did not realize it but my job description was being changed by assignment so that My job as a planner was no more and the work I was being asked to do developing products or information to develop the campus network something computing people could do better than planning people so blah blahblah I was laid offdue to lack of work. But is there a lack of work? Why no they just shifted the job of planning to the people in the academic units and make them come up with their own plans for developing their units by having competitions for staff and students to put together plans for student or academic computing needs and compete for funds like a prize .and what criteria are the judged on? Who knows? Its a prize so they could just put al the applications in a bin and spin it a couple times like a bingo cage and draw an application out. BINGO! Your application wins. But how many students can articulate their computing needs for their discipline if they are still learning it? If someone had told me as an undergraduate chemistry student to write a proposal for our units needs because that was the only way we would get the computers we needed to learn what we needed to graduate I would have said what? You mean you want me who has not graduated or taken the chem classes yet or math to tell the University what type of computer system I think we need to get our degrees in this field? Isnt this the job of our teachers and the administrators who have PHDs in this field to not only show us how to use the computers we have and train us in those fields but determine what we need?how would we as student know if we havent taken the classes and graduated yet? So the work of planning is just put back on the shoulders of the academics and grad students for them to decide and determine and no one work with them to help determine their needs or bring to attention of funding agencies so they can grant funds for higher education needs based on what our schools need not on the luck of a competition for limited funds and whether or not an academic unit is good at putting together proposals for funding part of its infrastructure or not. Imagine how haphazard the University would look if every academic unit had to compete for funds to have restrooms or water fountains in their halls something which should be planned for as a standard for ease of access and use for every professor staff ande student member not something they have to compete for with other units. I can just imagine what it would be like for sidewalks too if some units didnt get funding be cause they didnt apply or win a competition. Thats why they had comprehensive planning and positions like what I was funded to do at Academic Computing as well as at the Provosts level so that no unit was left out or unheard as to needs. Maybe that is what THE Microsoft CEO means but oh now he is carying forward all the verbal abuse I went thru as an employee from being called stupid people that just dont get it by Mary Lee from Administrative Date processing to being told I could become an administrative assitant for the Office of Vice President for Computing and communications a job in academia which is like a secretary but to the people from Los ANGELES IT WAS A $60000 /YR JOB TO having to write the job description for the adminstrator for Networks and Distributed Computing the new division made when we reorganized which then got rid of my position as planner in favor of the job being done by no one and me left as the reason they had to hire a grad student from Harvard to rewrite the documentation for Northwest net as I aborginal person with no degree in writing was repugnant and smelled bad at times as though did not use deodorant shower shave use cologne or have good oral hygiene and brush my teeth after lunch as often reeked of exhaust fumes due to being kidnapped and beaten and bled out for blood donations as well as often smelled like onion or garlic to ward away vampires so did not meet their criteria for being. Continued to be employed even though owed money and an apology as nowhere id it add that my children and I were the victims of domestic abuse by a person who not only wouldnt let us eat meat anymore at home or use deodorant or other personal hygiene items but also hit us sometimes in public to the point that I had to get help from my family and colleagues and leave the relationahip but also one of our supervisors had to get a restraining order in 1988 to protect himself and our family members and his people as we were the victims of a death threat by someone who was in my home and trying to take over my position in life elsewhere as an id thief. Also the money funding my position ran out as the person funding my position was a famous artist who died the year I was laid off so no way to cover up loss of his support as his estate was owned by his country as he had no visible next of kin but loved all of us young people like his own children and would have done anything for us to help us succeed in life as knew we needed to have things explained to us verbally and shown by illustration or pictures as only learned well that way not by reading anything without it being vsualized for us somehow by illustration too so we were at a loss with modern society as could not explain very well even though educated without being misunderstood or having to illustrate it ourselves as well. They are defunding our helping positions supposedly but since we still need them to do things everyday will. Send people to help and hopefully they will not attack us like Microsoft geek did over the fact that we as Native AMERICANS AS MISNAMED Indians so he thinks we owe his race an apology and honorary enrollment in a Federally recognized tribe so he can show our people how intelligent he and his people are and how they can make scads of money off our assets and get rid of our race of people so on Columbus day there will be a big void wher we would have stood and only people from Bangledesh who survived the anthrax outbreak my former husband Antonio caused there in foods as a Bioterrorist so ha ha ha they are more stupid and trusting than we are so could be considered below reigning civilization as well as did not listen to our warnings or those of others of how Dangerous he is and as ISIL member well known and feared by al qaida due to his ability to get things done so sweetly one would not know until they were dead that he wasnt okay to be with. Fire dept alarms going off and smell skunk so must go now. Trust what system budi? What system? Microsoft or u of WA?
