Saw the movie FURY today. Brad Pitt. I think its a classic war film. I wasnt around in WW2 but from my reading, it strikes me that this is one of the most realistic films about the war Ive seen. Anyway, I have to agree with the New York Times: Within this gore-spattered, superficially nihilistic carapace is an old-fashioned platoon picture, a sensitive and superbly acted tale of male bonding under duress. We see not only the violence but its impact on the violent. Shia LaBeouf is actually completely believably in this, playing a Southern Christian tank gunner. (The use of Biblical references by tank members--when theyre not gleeful that Nazi bastards are burning to death--is actually quite touchingly done.) According to wikipedia, While filming, star Shia LaBeouf pulled out his own tooth, cut his own face and refused to shower in order to understand what his character would have been through, angering much of the cast and crew -- still, it seems to have worked for him. Its a violent film--though theres a second act thats surprisingly humane--but moving. The Germans have a chance to show their humanity. My son Julian went with me, he was skeptical that the final fight in it could happen--but actually things like that did happen. I wont go into that, it would be close to a spoiler. Theres a *great* close-up fight with a German Panzer thats just terribly gripping and shows how a weaker armored warhorse, used skillfully, can come out on top.
