Saw the movie Nightcrawler today. Good performance from Jake - TopicsExpress

Saw the movie Nightcrawler today. Good performance from Jake Gyllenhaal as a novice video reporter capturing the seamier, bloodier side of L.A. (though even in Los Angeles, the darker, seedier aspects have a faux glamour about them). Interesting film about how the publics thirst for sensational, graphic video has changed how news is produced (and viewed) today. Its a solid, well-acted cynical movie (it reminded me of the deep cynicism that also runs through Gone Girl, which is really about how the economic recession forces drastic changes in a marriage...which is then fueled by the resentment of a privileged wife who wakes up and realizes her husband isnt giving her what she deserves; this isnt what she signed up for). Well, Gyllenhaals character of Louis Bloom HAS signed up for his gig....he loves every creepy aspect of it. Exceptional supporting work by Rene Russo (making a much welcome return to the big screen) as the news director who makes a deal with Bloom (she needs him because as she says of her bottom feeding news division, Imagine a screaming woman running down the street...with her throat cut...thats us). Her relationship with Louis takes some unexpected turns.....and a scene at a Mexican restaurant when both lay everything on the line is a mini-classic....first rate dialogue and pitch-perfect acting). Nightcrawler isnt for everyone...but it shows that with the right role Gyllenhaal can be a very good actor. The movie has a pulpy feel to it (much the same way that the movie Drive with Ryan Gosling had). In Nightcrawler you can see why Louis Bloom loves the world hes in (and sometimes, creating). The movies a modern, relevant winner about the media...and one mans obsession to be part of it any way possible. https://youtube/watch?v=u1uP_8VJkDQ
