Saw this exhibit. Utterly blew me away. Id seen some of Jamies painting before, seeing an exhibit is very different. First impressions are that he is a master painter. Second is that he is very, very bright. He choses to paint in a realistic tradition, dont think that makes it easier to understand. He clearly pays homage to both his father and to his grandfather.Beyond that Andy Warhol was a friend and influence. Winslow Homer was also an influence. His portraits of men remind me much of Thomas Eakins .There are many good portraits of women, rather fewer of men Eakins portraits of men are wonderful, and Jamie seems to follow. Many of his paintings make me think of Stephen King ,the darkness and weirdness. Do go and see. I suspect that in the future this exhibit will be referred to as a major rethinking as to who Jamie Wyeth is. A final thought Andy Warhol said that of the two of them Jamie Wyeth was the weirder. Having seem this exhibit it seems about right.
