Saw two fantastic shows at Moma a couple days ago. Matisse paper cutouts is unbelievable. The power of so much beauty in one place at so many scales is an event. I think that New York City could have a total blackout and the Matisse show could provide sufficient electricity to keep the lights on. Robert Gober has always existed in the periphery of my mind somewhere, not clearly because I didnt know his work well, but also persistently because I knew there was something important in it. The Heart Is Not A Metaphor, Gobers survey at Moma, is terrific. The power of love, the persistence of tragedy, all laid bare by a language built on the haunted normal.
