Say YES to Phoenix. Markos Moulitsas (Daily Kos) is calling for a Phoenix boycott of Netroots Nation 2015 and the 2016 Democratic National Convention. I take issue with this for one reason only: Arizona is more than its far-right legislation. Senators and Representatives who voted for 1070, 2305 & 1062 would have the world believe we are closed for business but I know differently. Phoenix has a 100% rating from the Human Rights Campaign, in large part due to Mayor Stantons commitment to non-discrimination. Other cities like Tempe are following suit. A coalition of more than 20 groups stood up to voting rights challenges by the legislature in 2013 and collected well over the required number of signatures to stop that law from going into effect. Perhaps Markos can so freely write off Arizona because it hasnt turned the proper color quite yet, but he may not be taking into account the following: In 2012, the AZ legislature added 8 Democrats, doubling the national average of pickups. Democrats also hold 5 of 9 Congressional seats. He might not have noticed that in 2013, Arizona passed Medicaid Expansion - - no easy task. Markos surly hasnt taken into account the thousands of people who have fought for equality in all forms: public education, anti-bullying, voting rights, workers rights. He may not know about organizations committed to helping neighborhoods thrive, have equal access to boards, commissions, city council members, legislators and that members of our minority communities are standing up against scare tactics and uniting, finding a stronger voice through organizing. I would challenge anyone both living here or outside of Arizona to TRY to ignore our economic potential, our beautiful landscape, our reasonable voices AND our talent.
