Say hello to Harry, a two year old brown lab. I picked him up - TopicsExpress

Say hello to Harry, a two year old brown lab. I picked him up yesterday afternoon for a two week B&T and we immediately went for a long walk with Coco, Molly and Monty to wear him out so that hed sleep easier in an unfamiliar place. Harry is with me for a bunch of unruly stuff. This is from the client 6-page form, section on behaviour: Jumps on people Pulls on lead Mouthing/nipping Play biting Digs up garden Escapes from garden Counter surfs Steals food Charges in and out of doorways Excessive attention seeking Excessively vocal at home Jumps on furniture Understands but wont obey Goes crazy at doorbell Extras: sometimes when were sat in garden he has started barking at us aggressively and does the same when were doing something not involving him. So weve got a bunch of stuff to sort. As always... The behaviours on these forms are really just symptoms of an imbalance that has developed. Focus on the state of mind of the dog, and fix the imbalance, and these symptoms fade away. Otherwise youll be chasing your tail forever just sticking band aids over individual problems. The most concerning thing for me though, was when I was picking him up and meeting the mum for the first time who has a very young baby, and she said that Harry has been known to steal food out of the babys hand. This is a huge boundary-cross and Ill cover it in more detail in later vids. Its a very big deal to steal food out of a babys hand, in fact in nature there are very strict rules about the super calm energy you need to be exhibiting to be allowed anywhere near a newborn, let alone during feeding time, and the mother would enforce that. So were going to work hard on food etiquette in general, and also include some 1/1 sessions with the family afterwards so that Harry understands the house rules, and that the baby is not an equal and not a play mate. This is the morning of day one and for the moment Im just laying down some foundational work to get things started, and looking to build trust. Harry, like most labs, is a bit of a scoffer and gulper so hell be eating from this feeder just to slow him down a bit.
