Say hello to one very fat and happy New Guinea Birdwing Caterpillar! It is about to pupate. Were excited -- we raised it partially on Aristolochia fimbriata, which is not the pipevine species it eats in the wild. Were including a pic of the proud parents that we took on 5/30/14, the day they emerged from their chrysalises. The male, larger, is yellow and black. The female is a rainbow of colors. Theyre no longer alive, but it took this long for their caterpillar to grow large enough to pupate! This is the only caterpillar that made it to this stage. Its a hard life when youre one of dozens of eggs! PS. This caterpillar is huge -- its the size of an average mans thumb.
