#SayNoToRapePH Petition: fb.me/76kAYqPAi” This post is for a journalist who seem overly concerned about our petition and Ms. Kat Alanos open letter to Secretary De Lima. We are NOT asking anyone to ELIMINATE DUE PROCESS. Under the same Bill of Rights of the Philippine constitution you mentioned, we, too, have the right to petition our government so we could express our views and grievances. The people we have petitioned are the Secretary and prosecutors from the Department Of Justice, which is an executive department of the Philippine government responsible for upholding the rule of law in the Philippines. It might surprise you Sir that we have a handful of lawyers who signed the petition and found nothing wrong with exercising our right to petition. This is the summary of our petition: Help our rape victims attain justice to prevent rapists from walking free from court to offend again by introducing mandatory briefings on myths about rape before investigation and trial of rape cases. Gender-based myths and misconceptions about rape and rape victims are evident in court decisions, they were also evident in the recent decisions of dismissed rape cases. The UN CEDAW 2010 report made a number of recommendations to the Philippines which were aimed at taking effective steps to ensure that decisions in rape cases are impartial and fair and not affected by prejudices or stereotypes. The Secretary of the Department Of Justice issues these guidelines. We want to ensure that these recommendations made by CeDAW, including training and education of lawyers and judges to change discriminatory attitudes, have been carried out to improve judiciary handling of rape cases. Regarding Kat Alano and undue delay in the filing of the case, there is a law that gives a prescription period of 20 years. When she is ready to file, she will. Kat has been told her rights and options. She has explained her reluctance to file straight away in her open letter to the Secretary. The trauma and bashings she had to deal whilst breaking her silence has been overwhelming. 2015 is a year of surprises, who knows what could happen. For Kat Alanos bashers who claim she is doing this for the fame, the recent BILL COSBY scandal brought up an interesting answer when victims were accused of coming out for fame --- do you know of anyone who successfully built a career on false allegations? They have more to lose coming out as victims because of the shame culture. The petition is asking our prosecutors, our law makers, our strong men and women to be our watchdogs, to implement our laws, provide guidelines to deal with rape myths and misconceptions so victims could break free from the imprisonment of being silent victims forever. You, Sir journalist, seem to have this sense of entitlement believing we, here at UVAR, owe you an explanation for everything we do. We are free to advertise our page, free to petition our government, and free to post sentiments of rape victims who want to get a message out there. We are an anti-rape community--UVAR stands with rape victims. (Admin: Chai)
