Saying Lenin re-introduced state capitalism and he admitted it is a banal and rather irrelevant argument against a Leninist. First, it only refers to the first years of the Soviet Union. Second, historically, it was the product of emergency in a situation of civil war and industrial breakdown created by workerist factory committees running industry without the coordination of central planning. Third, structurally, it was a product of class compromise between workers and peasants. Fourth, Leninists argue socialism is a phase of transition in which the dominant form of practice is political, not economic; its not a question of being not capitalist, but one of becoming communist. Fifth, state capitalism is a form of capitalism where the state is dominant; if the state is a proletarian state, state capitalism permits to put under political control the already existing post-revolution capitalist economy, and to change its relations of production.
