Scamming is becoming the most prevalent type of fraud out there and our residents are not immune. These frauds are usually conducted over the phone by cold-calling the victims and convincing the victims to send money in order to get something in return. Just a few of the popular scams that our residents have experienced are utility scams, IRS scams, US Citizenship & Immigration scams, and lottery scams, to name a few. In addition, scammers have also used extortion methods to convince would-be victims to send money or risk being targeted in a violent crime. One of the common denominators in these scams is the scammer’s demand for payment in Green Dot MoneyPak cards. Although Green Dot is a legitimate funds transfer business, many scammers have learned to exploit the use of these cards for their purposes. The CTPD encourages our residents and beyond to always be wary of people initiating contact with you and requesting personal information or money, and we urge you to never provide this information. Your suspicions should be heightened immediately if during one of these contacts, you are requested to obtain a Green Dot card. If you are victimized, please contact your local police department.
