Scared parents taking daughters out of Lakki Marwat school Barkatullah Marwat Saturday, June 22, 2013 From Print Edition the news LAKKI MARWAT: The scared parents are taking their daughters out of a school in Nawarkhel village due to threat of kidnapping by a handful of elements. A survey conducted by The News revealed that the residents of Nawarkhel, situated 10 kilometres from Lakki town, have been feeling insecure about the future of their daughters enrolled at the Government Girls Middle School in the village and other schools in Lakki town. The district administration and education authorities have failed to take action against the elements who have become a threat for the girl students. Last year a 10th class student was kidnapped from the same village and later forced to marry one of the kidnappers during her captivity. Since then, many parents have opted to take out their daughters from school due to the fear of kidnapping. The locals said that about 41 girl students have quit the school so far. The kidnapping of another student in Nawarkhel, they said, has aggravated the situation and caused more worries to the parents. “She along with her nine-year old brother was on her way home when four accused, namely, Hidayatullah, Inamullah, Hikmatullah and Ayub bundled her into their car and drove away,” said a local. Taking prompt action, the locals chased the kidnappers and caught them in Jangkhel village where they had taken refuge at the house of one Gul Wali, who is allegedly patronising the criminal gangs. The parents of the girl and villagers of Nawarkhel finally secured her safe release from the kidnappers through the village committee members at Jangkhel village. The accused were allowed to go away instead of being caught and handed over to the law-enforcement agency. A villager told The News that the Station House Officer of Darra Pezu Police Station, Sahib Khan, was informed about the incident but he reportedly said he was busy in a raid and did not bother to show up. It was learnt that most villagers were now against the girl education. On her part, a girl who had been kidnapped said: “I secured 423 marks in the 9th class examination and was promoted to class 10. I wish to become a doctor, but these elements have been a constant threat to the girls like me as they have resorted to kidnappings and contracting forced marriage with them to stop them from receiving education.” She added that she was among the brilliant and outstanding students in her class as she had secured distinction throughout her academic career. The Nawarkhel village with a population of 8,000 falls in the provincial assembly constituency, PK-75 though earlier it was in PK-76. There are four government primary schools, a middle and high school for boys while for girls there was only one middle school and a private school at the village. There are no Taliban militants in the village, but a group of elements, mostly illiterate, have reportedly links with the militants.
