Schalke sign Szalai FC Schalke 04 have signed striker Adam Szalai from fellow Bundesliga side 1. FSV Mainz 05. The 25-year old has signed a four-year contract in Gelsenkirchen to keep him at the club until 30 June 2017. He has been given the shirt number 28 ahead of the 2013-14 season. Royal Blues general manager Horst Heldt was quoted via the club’s official website as saying: “Adam Szalai is a great striker; at Mainz he produced a good strike rate. The past season has shown that we need a depth of good players. Adam is at a good age and brings a strong character. He is greedy and wants to achieve a lot with Schalke.” Last season, Szalai scored 13 Bundesliga goals in 29 appearances for Mainz whom finished 13th in the German top flight. The 6’4” striker began his professional career with VfB Stuttgart’s reserve team in the Regional League South in 2006-07 after coming through the youth system there after joining the Reds in 2004. Szalai left Germany after one season for a spell with the Real Madrid reserve team which lasted until 2010 when he joined Mainz 05, initially on loan. During his time at the Coface Arena, and the previous stadium, the Bruchweg stadium, Adam Szalai scored 21 goals in 79 Bundesliga appearances for the O-Fives. He has scored 7 goals in 16 international matches for Hungary. Schalke 04 have added the Hungarian striker to their team which already boasts Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Jefferson Farfán, Teemu Pukki, Chinedu Obasi and Ciprian Marica as attacking options.
