Students with the National Lawyers Guild at Penn Law are organizing a protest on Monday, Feb. 3, against Larry Summers, the ex-Secretary of the Treasury who deregulated banks for Wall Street and caused the financial crisis. Summers is notorious for using the IMF and WTO to bully countries into gutting trade protections, resulting in the loss of millions of American jobs to sweatshop labor. His environmental record is almost as bad as his economic policies: he played a key role in blocking the ratification of the Kyoto Protocol. As if this guy couldnt get any worse, hes also infamous for advocating the export of toxic waste to under-polluted African countries with the lowest wages. The demonstration is taking place at 4pm in front of the Fitts Auditorium at Penn Law (downstairs by the Sansom Street entrance). If youve got a half hour on Monday, wed really appreciate your show of support in opposing the poster child of Wall Street cronyism - but if you cant make it, please help spread the word! We hope to see you there! For information: nlg.pennlaw@gmail Tuesday, February 4, 6:00pm, Philly Net Tuesday, Friends Center 1501 Cherry St. On February 4, Philly Net Tuesday will feature our signature “Crowdsourcing Change” format. Here’s how it works: Two or three local nonprofits share how they’re using online marketing and social media/networking to achieve their goals and objectives. Then the crowd (that’s you!) participates in a facilitated discussion about how each organization might use the social web to even greater effect. Note this is not an event ABOUT crowdsourcing; were simply using the term crowdsourcing to describe the flavor of the process being used to provide feedback to these three local organizations. The three local groups anxious to receive the wisdom of the crowd are the Newbold Neighbors Association, the Public Interest Law Center of Philadelphia, and West Philly Local. The event will be held at the Friends Center, 1501 Cherry Street. Doors open at 6:00 PM on the evening of Tuesday, February 4. Light fare will be available, and RSVPs are appreciated for planning, but not required. Whether you’re a social media expert or an interested citizen your perspectives and opinions are welcome and valuable. So, come and join the crowd with your questions, insights and reactions, and help these local organizations more effectively use social tools to achieve their important objectives. This is a great learning and sharing opportunity – not only for the presenting organizations, but for all participants! Thanks to the American Friends Service Committee for sponsorship. Wednesday, February 5, 2:00pm, Peoples Hearing on Prison Expansion, Pennsylvania State Capitol Building, Harrisburg, PA Join Decarcerate PA and many others on February 5th at the Capitol in Harrisburg for a People’s Hearing on prison expansion. Pennsylvania is currently spending over $400 million to build two new prisons in Montgomery County. The two prisons, named SCI Phoenix I and II, are the second most expensive construction project in the states history. We now know that the Department of Corrections lied to legislators in order to justify these unjustifiable projects. The legislature has so far refused to investigate, so we are holding our own hearings to demand that prison construction be stopped and the DOC held accountable. Instead of investing in mass incarceration, Pennsylvania should be investing in education, healthcare, jobs, community based reentry, and social services. Instead of building more prison cells, politicians should engage in meaningful sentencing reform to reduce the prison population and bring people home to their families and communities. Peoples Hearing starts at 2:00 in the Rotunda. All three buses for the peoples hearing are now full. We are trying to arrange carpools for additional people who want to attend, so if you want to try and join us for the trip you are still welcome to come at 10am at the Youth United for Change office and we will fit as many people in cars as we can. But unfortunately we can no longer guarantee rides for people who are just now registering. If you have a car and are driving to Harrisburg and want to help give other people rides, please let us know by emailing decarceratepa@gmail! Cant make it on the 5th but still want to support? Consider making a donation to help us pay for the buses. You can donate at decarceratepa.info/donate. In conversation with Bonnie and John Raines and Keith Forsyth, of The Citizens Commission to Investigate the FBI, Phila. Free Library, 1901 Vine Street, Phila., PA 19103. On March 8, 1971 a group of anti-war activists calling themselves The Citizens Commission to Investigate the FBI broke into an small FBI office in Media, PA, just outside of Philadelphia, and took thousands of files that documented the Constitutional violations, harassment and domestic spying of J. Edgar Hoover’s secret COINTELPRO program. Washington Post reporter Betty Medsger was the first to receive and report on these files. For three years she made headlines and history with this information, and continued her investigation long after she left the paper. After decades of silence, the former Philadelphia Evening Bulletin reporter convinced the anonymous activists to come forward with their story in this prescient tale that foreshadows post-9/11 spying and NSA state secrets.
