A-Space (4722 Baltimore Ave) Prisons are increasingly growing in this country and we must support our prisoners as they move through this exploitative prison system that is riddled with abuse, exploitation and manipulation. Being that most of our prisons in PA are hours away from the city, they are built to separate human contact and support from families, where many of our prisoners are not privy to contact with their family and friends. If you ask any prisoner, they will say that a letter from the outside helps subside the loneliness. Come out and join us as we support our prisoners in Pennsylvania. Tuesday, January 28, 7:00pm, Film Showing: FREE ANGELA AND ALL POLITICAL PRISONERS, Calvary Church, 48th & Baltimore Ave, Philadelphia 19143 Special Film Showing & Fundraiser for The Campaign to Bring Mumia Home Free. Nearly forty years later, and for the first time, Angela Davis speaks frankly about the actions that branded her as a terrorist and simultaneously spurred a worldwide political movement for her freedom. Saturday, February 1, 12:00pm, Death Walk against Drones, 12th and Market Sts. As we enter another year of violence, wars, and deaths to civilians, the United States continues DRONE BOMBINGS IN PAKISTAN, AFGHANISTAN,YEMEN, and SOMALIA as well. We walk with banners showing a drone bomber and hand out leaflets to inform people on the street that this is being done in our names and with our money. We oppose the wars and all bombings. We will do the DEATH WALK on SATURDAY, Feb. 1, 2014 from 12:00pm – 1:00pm, meeting at 12th & Market. Wear BLACK, we will bring plain white masks and will be sure to have some extra masks but it would be helpful if you RSVP just to be sure. One person will hold a sign or banner, others will pass out leaflets. They will not wear the mask. We will continue to carry signs opposing U.S. DRONE WARFARE and TERRORISM, which is the killing of civilians. We will be walking in the manner of a SILENT DEATH WALK to bring attention to the wars and the victims in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and other countries where drones are used. This is street theater, thus we keep to the form of single file, silence, masks and black clothing. We will have a leaflet to be distributed by the person without mask so as not to intimidate people passing by. Our leaflet reflects the political position of the original group of walkers and is intended to educate the public on U.S. drone warfare. We oppose warfare drones wherever they are used. If you do not intend to wear black clothing or a white mask, we will ask you to walk at the rear of the line, single file. This is simply a way to include everyone but not change the form of the Death Walk and the message to the public through street theater – the deaths of civilians by drone warfare/bombings. DRONES ARE IN THE NEWS THESE DAYS. IF YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR ARTICLE TO RECOMMEND FOR THE LEAFLET PLEASE E-MAIL IT TO [email protected] Saturday, February 1, 12:00pm, Citywide Student Assembly: Turn Up 4 The Movement, Edison High School, 151 W Luzerne St, Philadelphia, PA 191 Youth United for Change and Philadelphia Student Union Present: Turn Up 4 The Movement! Tuesday, February 4, 6:00pm, Philly Net Tuesday, Friends Center 1501 Cherry St. On February 4, Philly Net Tuesday will feature our signature “Crowdsourcing Change” format. Here’s how it works: Two or three local nonprofits share how they’re using online marketing and social media/networking to achieve their goals and objectives. Then the crowd (that’s you!) participates in a facilitated discussion about how each organization might use the social web to even greater effect. We are still in the process of selecting the local organizations eager to receive the wisdom of the crowd. If your organization would like to apply to participate in this fun and (hopefully) useful process, please fill in the form at tinyurl/phlnet2-crowd). Info about the participating organizations will be coming out shortly. The event will be held at the Friends Center, 1501 Cherry Street. Doors open at 6:00 PM on the evening of Tuesday, February 4. Light fare will be available, and RSVPs are appreciated for planning, but not required. Whether you’re a social media expert or an interested citizen your perspectives and opinions are welcome and valuable. So, come and join the crowd with your questions, insights and reactions, and help these local organizations more effectively use social tools to achieve their important objectives. This is a great learning and sharing opportunity – not only for the presenting organizations, but for all participants! Thanks to the American Friends Service Committee for sponsorship.
