Schnabel the composer has always been in the shadows of Schnabel the performer (as well as Schnabel the teacher). The reactions Ive encountered while playing a few of his works have been anything from people being positively surprised, all the way down to saying that he should have stuck to performing and teaching the music of others, to paraphrase a critic. I find his musical universe worthy of more exploring - lets hope some of his works will enter the repertoire of more musicians in the future. The 7 piano pieces date from 1947, around the time when he had just returned to Europe after WW2. These were the last pieces he completed.
