School bus stopped for speeding - Jugiong Thursday, 20 March 2014 05:23:47 AM A teacher, transporting 28 children on a school bus in the state’s south, has been fined more than $1000 for allegedly speeding and driving the vehicle without a proper licence. Shortly before 10am yesterday (Wednesday 19 March 2014), police checked the speed of a white coach with Victorian registration plates driving south on the Hume Highway near Jugiong. It’s alleged the bus was travelling at 125km/h. Heavy vehicles, including buses, are restricted to a speed of 100km/h. Police stopped the bus and spoke with the driver, a 30-year-old school teacher transporting children back to Victoria after an event in Canberra. Officers checked the man’s details, and discovered he did not hold the appropriate licence to drive a vehicle the size of the coach. The man was issued with infringement notices for exceeding the speed limit by more than 20km/h ($531) and unlicensed for class ($607). Police grounded the bus, and organised alternate transport for the children. “The potential for a crash in this scenario was significant, and we are thankful to have pulled the bus over before a tragedy unfolded,” Acting NSW Police Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Stuart Smith, said. “The current NSW road toll is 81, which is 22 more than the same time last year, and the reason why we are conducting Operation Saturation – a state-wide, month-long blitz on speeding, drink driving, fatigue and other dangerous driver behaviour. “Speeding is still the number-one contributor to trauma on NSW roads, and we urge all drivers to obey the road rules, no matter what you’re driving, where you’re travelling, or where you’re from,” Acting Commander Smith said.
