School of Language, Arts and Media Come SLAM with slam! Thursday October 30th 6.30pm AUSAID Performance Space ENTRY: FREE ALL WELCOME Expressions of interest are invited for the end of Semester POETRY SLAM. This is open to poets from beginners to those who have already experienced the thrill of competitive poetry slamming. What is a poetry slam? A poetry slam is a competitive form of performance poetry. It was popularized in the United States in the 1980s, and was introduced at USP in 2006 by the School of Language, Arts and Media. How does it work? In a slam, poets perform for a live audience. Their poems must be their own work and less than three minutes long. Poets are not allowed to use music, props or other aids. The audience is the ultimate arbitrator of quality and is encouraged to be vocal in their opinions. Expressions of Interest Send in your full name, a short bio-data (less than 80 words) to [email protected]. First 15-18 poets to send in their full EOIs will be considered. EOS’s close on Monday 27th October. Attractive Prizes on Offer Some Tips for SLAM Poetry • The slam format draws heavily on forms of spoken word such as the poetry of the African diasporas and Hip-Hop, but you can use any form of poetry from traditional sonnets to free verse forms. There is NO prescribed way to do it. The aim is simply to entertain the audience with your verse. Questions to ask yourself in editing your poems Slam is written for an audience, not exclusively for therapy or self-expression. Therefore, one needs to edit their work with the audience in mind. • Have you got rid of everything that is superfluous to your message? • Is your message clear? Is it easy to understand your point? • What rhetorical techniques can you use? Rhyme, rhythm, repetition, puns, wordplay, imagery, other techniques? • What images have you come up with? Do they make sense? How can you make them clearer? Practice Makes The World Perfect! It is preferable but not essential to learn a poem off by heart. Poetry Slam Rules 1.
