Schools all over America, including special schools, are facing - TopicsExpress

Schools all over America, including special schools, are facing the same issues relating to effective and appropriate methods of restraint as in the UK; a lack of standardisation and education relating to the use of force. Many states in America have very little regulation or legislation relating to the restraint of pupils, leading to a wide variety of methods of control that include the administration of electric shocks and drawstring bags. Others include sensory deprivation rooms; similar to that of the PINDOWN regime that was banned in the UK due to the PINDOWN Inquiry in 1991. Although these methods of control are banned in the UK, there remains the problem that there are no standardised systems or training in place, allowing for members of staff to use what they think is correct in any given situation. In turn this quite often leads to staff using excessive force and dangerous techniques; this can result in injury to both the pupil and teacher, or even death.
