Schools construct a particular image of science. Some - TopicsExpress

Schools construct a particular image of science. Some characteristics feature. Others end up in oblivion. Most children are familiar with heroes such as Einstein and Darwin. However, they rarely learn about the messy, day-to-day practice of science in which scientists are ordinary human beings. Imagination -- the formation of mental images -- is at the root of how human beings modify their material world. In school science, this process is fundamental to how scientists, actually create their own scientific enterprise when they start their professional lives. So what is the process of imagining science in education? Epicization and Novelization. (*) Epicization dominates imagination in science -- the absolute past of science heroes and peak discoveries. (*) Novelization is a continuous renewal of narratives that derives from dialogical interaction. The wider aim of science education is to bring the actual world of science closer to students. This makes Novelization, more important than Epicization. Ref: "Imagination of Science in Education: From Epics to Novelization" by Michiel van Eijck, and Wolff-Michael Roth.
