Schools for children of military personnel to be restructured - TopicsExpress

Schools for children of military personnel to be restructured China’s current central leadership headed by President Xi Jinping has once again shown its determination to reduce privileges enjoyed by the country’s elite and achieve social justice. The government is taking new steps to reform military-run schools which accept the children of military personnel. Most of these schools, mainly primary and high schools, were established in revolutionary bases during China’s civil war, and used to be attended by the children of many senior officials and military officers. But after the establishment of the People’s Republic in 1949, they tended to become more “aristocratic” and detached from the ordinary folks. So to some extent, the new reform echoes a call by President Xi Jinping for further efforts to implement the mass line campaign designed to strengthen ties between the people and the Communist Party of China (CPC). Mass line refers to a guideline under which CPC officials and members are required to prioritize the interests of the people and exercise power on their behalf. Under the restructuring plan, such schools located outside military bases will be taken over by local governments to run. Those situated inside bases will be shut down if they are located in cities, or be transferred to local governments if they are in towns and border areas. The transfer or closure of the schools will be financed by central authorities.
