Science Mentor Project firsts for Canberra College This year the Science department has premiered the Science Mentors Project in association with Melrose High School. The program has been developed by Geoff McNamara at Melrose and has proven to be so successful that Canberra College is now extending that fantastic opportunity to College age students. Two of our students volunteered to trial the project this year with great success. Ann S started the ball rolling with her project with Professor Margi Bohm from the University of Canberra. Her project entailed looking at the heat stresses that might be imposed on elephants under climate change conditions. This involved travelling to Taronga Zoo in Sydney and taking various measurements of the elephants and their surrounds. Emily E started her mentor project later with Professor Owen Aitkin from the Australian National University. Emily’s project involved investigating the nutrient needs of a major food crop (barley) under enhanced carbon dioxide conditions. This involved the growth and measurement of the barley in normal and heightened carbon dioxide. Professor Aitkin assisted with the measurement using sophisticated measuring equipment supplied by the Uni. Both projects were presented at Melrose High on Tuesday 4th November in the concluding ceremonies. Both students acquitted themselves well and embraced the opportunity with great interest. Congratulations and thanks for being the first students in the Mentors program at Canberra College.
