Science Tit Bits Dark side of the Moon ‘Dark side of the moon’. This is a popular misconception – there is no such thing. The moon gets the same amount of sunlight falling all over it, just as the earth does. However, what is true is that the moon always shows the same side towards the earth. So there is such a concept as the far side of the moon. The moon is not totally uniformly spherical, as far as its gravitation mass distribution is concerned. Millions of years ago, the moon probably rotated at a different speed, but over the long geological time that has passed, it has come to rotate at the same speed as the earth, so it always points the same face to the earth.
