The researchers say it acts as a safe house for good bacteria, which can be used to effectively reboot the gut following a bout of dysentery or cholera. I have personally witnessed two people who were struggling with their appendix and added cultured foods and never did wind up having the surgery. This is not to say that you should play around with appendicitis, because it can be fatal. This is just another reason to understand that you are trillions of bacteria. They have yet to discover all the things that bacteria can do.
