Scientists in Romania have invented artificial blood that could one day be used to end blood shortages and save lives. Researchers hope that further testing will confirm that it can be used in humans without side effects. So far results have been extremely positive. The first labratory tests involved treating mice with the blood and they have displayed no signs of inflammation, disease or rejection reactions. Previos attempts to create blood have failed because researchers have not been able to find the right type of protein. Further tests will be carried out to prove that there is no risk before any attempt to test the blood on humans can be considered. Despite the fact that there is still much more research to be done this is an amazing breakthough. Romanian scientists have spent six years developing the blood. It is made from salts, water and hemerythrin from sea worms. Hemerythrin is an oligomeric protein that transports oxygen. If further testing is successful this blood could be suitable to be given to up to 98% of the population. Even if the tests are not successful the information that scientists have discovered here will be vital to future developments.
