Scituate, Massachusetts — The Scituate Historical Society will commemorate one of the most famous sea battles in United States Navy history with a special ceremony and plaque dedication at 11:30 a.m., on Saturday, June 8, at the Scituate Lighthouse on Lighthouse Road. The public is invited to attend the dedication event at Scituate Light. There is no admission fee. At 4 p.m. that day, historian George Daughan, author of “1812: The Navy’s War,” will speak on the Chesapeake-Shannon battle at Scituate’s Grand Army Hall. Admission is also free for this event, although donations would be appreciated. Refreshments will be served following Daughan’s lecture, and the author will sign copies of his book, which will be for sale at the GAR Hall event in addition to other commemorative items. The event will honor the 200th anniversary of the ship-to-ship battle off the Scituate coast in June 1813, between the USS Chesapeake and the British ship HMS Shannon, which ended with the battle cry of Chesapeake’s commander, Captain James Lawrence: “Don’t Give Up the Ship!”
