Scores of National Water Commission customers in Breadnut Hill and surrounding areas in St. Ann are now without their regular piped water due to acts of vandals who invaded the NWC’s Breadnut Hill water supply facility in the parish last night and made off with over 600 feet of electrical service wires. As a result, the commission is now bemoaning the fact that it will have to fork out close to a 1 Million Dollars to replace the stolen wires and restore water to its customers. This latest incident is close on the heels of vandalism and theft of electrical wires and other pumping accessories at the commission’s Bridgewater facility also in St. Ann for the third time within a 6 month period. These incidents of theft at the Bridgewater facility have forced the already cash-strapped entity to spend approximately 5 Million Dollars to replace the stolen items and repair the damage inflicted by these miscreants. While the NWC is deeply outraged and outright fed- up with the unpatriotic and selfish behaviour of those ruthless hoodlums who are strident in their efforts to derail its operations, its most immediate plans is to relieve the discomfort and inconvenience of the over 1000 persons in Breadnut Hill and surrounding areas who have been affected by this regrettable incident. This will be done through the trucking of potable water to the customers as we expedite the process to replace the electrical wires, so normality can be restored to those communities. Julia Gordon, Community Relations Manager of the NWC’s Western Division has condemned the incidents and is lamenting the devastating effects those activities will have on our reignited quest to improve the reliability of water supply to our valued customers. She further argued that if these attacks continue, this could result in huge losses to both customers and the NWC. As such, she is pleading to all law abiding citizens to be united in the fight against the few disruptive elements who are adamant in crippling the NWC’s effort to improve the standard of living of all Jamaicans. Consequently, the NWC is urging the public to assist in identifying the individuals responsible for this or any other incident of theft at the NWC by calling the St. Ann Police at 972-2373. At the same time, the NWC is cautioning the public to refrain from purchasing these wires from any unauthorised dealer/s and make a stance against larceny and attack on Jamaica’s primary water provider.
