Scorsese, Out of Context. Finally watched Martin Scorseses The Wolf of Wall Street last night. After seeing many documentaries about the 2008 banking crisis, I expected to see a portrait of a high-flying stocktrader tragically unraveling. Instead, the movie played mostly as a dark comedy because its tough to empathize with any of the (mostly unlikeable) characters, and because all the investors/victims werent really part of the story. My TVs on the fritz, so I sat down on the floor to watch the movie off my laptop, while eating a bowl of soup. At the start of the movie, theres a series of scenes to set the materialistic tone, showing Leonardo DiCaprio engaging in some less-than-virtuous behavior involving ladies of the night and pharmaceuticals... ...and right at that moment, the doorbell rang. I put my bowl down, paused the movie, and opened the door; and a member of our church was standing there, having come by unexpectedly to drop off some clothes for a thrift store. We chit-chatted for a moment, and then she went on her way. I sat back down on the floor, and then realized that 1) I had paused the movie during a fairly graphic scene, and 2) my laptop screen was in clear view of the front porch. I dont think that she misinterpreted the situation, but nonetheless, Im sticking to watching Whats In the Bible for awhile. (No, this wasnt the scene, but its the common denominator for the pace and tone of the movie.)
