Scots paying a high price for Westminsters PFI Debt THOMAS McCaffertys attack on the Scottish NHS( Letters,November12th) ignores the fact that thanks to the Scottish government our health service is in much better state than south of the border and our nurses got a pay rise, unlike their colleagues in England. In addition to Westminsters ongoing cuts, our Scottish Health Boards are struggling due to the financial burden of havinf to repay Westminsters long term PFI debt burden. While the SNP has protected Scotlands NHS in government,it is estimated that 50 per cent of the NHS in England will be run by private companies by 2020. The continual privatisation of the NHS south of the border has consequences for Scotland,as the NHS budget in England has a direct effect on Scotlands devolved budget. Every £10 cut from NHS England through austerity, privatisation or patient charges reduces Scotlands budget by £1. As LABOUR has signed up to tories austerity plans and the NHS PRIVATISATION,THINGS WILL ONLY GET WORSE OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS AS THE UK government plans to double the cuts previously announced-from £25 BN TO £48bn after next Mays elections.Yet another reason why Scotland needs full fiscal powers.
