Scott Michaelsen When we were talking about Liszts involvement in the rebellions of Paris in the 1830s? Turns out hed met Victor Hugo during this time, and did participate on the sidelines of these affairs (while Hugo himself participated at the barricades, it is unclear the extent of Liszts involvement, as he was not yet 20 years old at the time: he was quite literally a student). He sketched the unfinished Revolutionary Symphony based on his experiences in the rebellions, and later, in 1849, following another uprising in Paris (and simultaneously in Liszts native Hungary), adapted the first movement of the unfinished five-movement symphony into the symphonic poem called LHéroïde funèbre (the funeral of heroes). Regarding the revolutions in Paris, he had this to say: De Maistre remarks that over thousands of years it is hard to find any during which, by rare exception, peace reigned on earth - which otherwise resembles an arena where people fight each other as did the gladiators in former times, and where the most valiant salute Destiny as the master and Providence as their judge, before entering the lists. In these wars and carnages that succeed one another like sinister games, whatever the colors of the flags which rise courageous and proud against each other, over both camps they flutter soaked in heroic blood and inexhaustible tears. #LesMizInBend
