Scott Schultz for MSU Trustee Saturday at the 8th District - TopicsExpress

Scott Schultz for MSU Trustee Saturday at the 8th District Candidate Forum in Brighton, one of my opponents (actually two, since theyre running together) disagreed with me on a MAJOR issue: I have stated many times that I not only want to FREEZE tuition/room and board (tuition was just raised yet again by 2.8%) at current levels for ONE FULL SCHOOL YEAR while we research ways to actually CUT TUITION for OUR KIDS to more affordable levels. But my opponent(s) said my position on freezing tuition was one he couldnt agree with--he said hed like to work with the Legislature to try and avoid tuition increases. Hasnt this been tried already? This is a tremendous difference between them and me! Ive received the endorsement of the House GOP Caucus Leader who happens to be the Subcommittee Chair for Appropriations for Higher Education--his Committee determines the level of funding MSU will actually receive from Lansing annually. He has endorsed me so I can be a sound fiscal voice for MSU for FISCAL RESTRAINT and hed like to work with me as an MSU Trustee. (He has met my opponents in the past). Another issue brought up at the Forum was TERM LIMITS--I believe 8 years (one term) is enough for a Trustee, to encourage a mix of new ideas at MSU. Im saying now that Ill LIMIT MYSELF to just ONE 8 year term. One of my opponents, however, has been on university boards (MSU and CMU) for 18 YEARS!!!!! She also have NEVER voted NO to any tuition or room and board INCREASES to help OUR KIDS. Instead, she is a reliable YES vote for ALL increases as not one time in 18 years has she voted NO. Do we really need more of this? Isnt it time to pat her on the back and say, its time to let it go? What havent you done in 18 years that you need yet another 8 year term which would mean youve spent 1/3 rd of your life on university boards? REALLY? Its NOT important to me if present, or former Trustees feel its necessary to fly to Germany on MSUs dime (OUR KIDS DIMEs) to watch a basketball game play, or go to Dubai, or South America for outreach. Other people have questioned such practices, but Im going to stick to the issues noted above. Two years ago my two opponents spent $92,000 and $94,000, respectively, most of it BEFORE the Convention, to gain their nominations. Are we really all about checkbook politics? I surely hope not, but the amounts of funds being spent and how (which is a topic for later) could rival or exceed those amounts? Given the results at the ballot box last November, it seems like a lot of money may have been wasted? Since then, they have been running NON STOP which is why many of you are familiar with them. But, isnt that amount of money for VOLUNTEER questionable primarily to just prevail at the GOP Convention? Please hink about it?
