Scottish News @ ScottishTimes SNP Press Release: INDEPENDENT SCOTLAND WILL BE BETTER PLACED TO PROTECT CONSUMERS The SNP has today welcomed a Scottish Government report outlining how consumers and business will be better protected in an independent Scotland. The report makes clear that creating a distinctive Scottish system could include regulating pay day loans, reassessing delivery charges and cutting down on nuisance calling. While the current system of consumer protection in the UK is cluttered and haphazard, an independent Scotland would be able to create a single body to protect against unscrupulous traders and look after consumer interests. Commenting, SNP MSP Mike MacKenzie, said: “I welcome this report as a positive step toward a better protection for consumers in Scotland. “It makes clear that we have an opportunity to create a much better, more unified system that truly serves Scotland’s interests, instead of the haphazard setup that currently exists in the UK. “Consumer protection already operates within the separate Scottish legal system, so it makes far more sense that Holyrood should control the national policy. “This paper shows that an independent Scotland could develop a more integrated, simplified consumer landscape that provides a single point of access through which the people of Scotland can be better directed to the support they need. “We have a clear opportunity to do things better and build a system of consumer protection that is more efficient and avoids the mistakes of the UK. Only a Yes vote in next year’s referendum will secure that for us and allow us to create a system that delivers more for households and businesses.”
