Scottish? Sorry you can’t come to Heathrow….. A large part - TopicsExpress

Scottish? Sorry you can’t come to Heathrow….. A large part of the Better Together campaign was about how it was advantageous for Scotland to be part of something bigger. Personally I think this concept persuaded some people to vote NO. There was a comforting factor in the safety in numbers and shared resources mantra. Despite that fact that Independence would not have ended either of these things unless Westminster decided to leave Scotland out in the cold as some kind of punishment…. Anyway I digress. Yesterday Virgin Air announced it would stop its short haul flights from Scotland to Heathrow. Why is this bad news? Well the long haul way of traveling is becoming more and more about “hub” airports followed by short flights to your actual destination. In other words there are less and less (Edinburgh Airport might be the exception to this) long haul flights from “regional” airports. You are meant to get a flight to a Hub airport like Heathrow and then fly onwards. But for us Scots that means having to fly BA…… they have a monopoly on the matter since the withdraw of Virgin. Not so much as Better Together as you will have to pay what we say Scotland. However there is one thing that the powers that be are forgetting. There are also Hub Airports in the Netherlands and Germany. Both of which have flights from Scotland’s main airports. There is a successful route between Aberdeen and Frankfurt and this is no accident. The Germans want our business. A potential 5 million customers is not something to be ignored. Unless you are based in London when it us just assumed they will fall into line because….. well just because.
