Scratching My Heading thinking.... my sunday afternoon Palava... :) Why is our English so literally translated from our local languages and sounds different? Why dont we (Ghanaians) speak plain, simple and clear grammar? I just heard a guy on TV saying .... the perceived perception of ... ... what are you insinuating? why not simply ask ...what are you implying or what do you really mean? I hear people asking where do you stay, instead of where do you live? My grammar isnt great, but Im still learning as Im a big advocate of conversational writing that’s engaging, persuasive, and fun to read. You might consider grammar an annoying technicality, a minuscule detail of speech and writing not worth much effort. But I believe it deserve every attention possible. Also, I noticed some words appears to confuse us a lot. ENVY & JEALOUSY. The word “envy” implies a longing for someone else’s good fortunes. “Jealousy” is far more nefarious. “Jealousy” is what happens when your significant other swoons over your good-looking friend. Some of us appear to enjoy using the word Nor without the use of the word Neither. IF and WHEN, also appears to be interchangeably use in their expressive form most often by us. When’ and ‘if’ are both used while referring to the FUTURE. ‘When’ should be used while referring to something that one is certain will happen. ‘If’ should be used while referring to something that might or might not happen. May and Might: “May” implies a possibility. “Might” implies far more uncertainty. For example, You might get stopped by the Police if you drive while drunk” implying the possibility is high. You might get stopped by a soldier if you drive while drunk” implies a possibility that is far more remote. Effectiveness and Efficiency: This mainly used in the corporate terrain. Effectiveness is about doing the right task, completing activities and achieving goals. Efficiency is about doing things in an optimal way, for example doing it the fastest or in the least expensive way. It could be the wrong thing, but it was done optimally. How I wish brilliant writers like my good pals who are so blessed with brilliant writing skills like Salem Barry, Charles Kofi Fekpe, Nathaniel Eduku-Ackah, Kofi Blankson Ocansey, Franklin Cudjoe, Amaki Vortia, Joshua Mortoti, Kwame Kyei-Baffour, Sheila Dzifa Dorkenoo, Wilson Arthur, Babi Angel, Kobe Siaw, Egbert Faibille. Jnr, Charles A. Sam Gfp, George Sam Jnr, Omama Kwaku Sei, Mikey Omane-Achamfuor, etc,etc could add their bit to help us better our grammar a little more
