Scratching the ground, her leather luggage grinned tiny particles of sand on the floor. He said no one would marry her after having two kids. With tears in her eyes, she was going to prove him wrong. Looking back, it was all stupid, he said she cheated, she said she felt abandoned, didnt cheat and that his mother was dead-on determined to see her kicked out. They could have said sorry to bury the hatchet, they could have just sat down, talked it over, and if any of the allegations were true, they could have just owned up to it and be forgiven. But love isnt that easy, feelings are involved, emotions, time, trust and heart, heart- ache. So she left. Meet Uncle Alfred. Hes mummys friend and hes such a nice person, this was two years down the line and then they had a baby. Shes your sister, just the way you both are brothers. Love and cherish her as you would yourselves, She actually had a baby this time, I think she was married now. It didnt get any better with time, he screamed and yelled on the two boys most of the time for little mistakes. They grew scared of him. If she had stayed maybe they could have found a way. She says she begged, went to his office and he kicked her out, still telling her that no one would marry her, as her tummy had sagged and she now had two kids. So she got married. He was a hunk, tall, he played the acoustic guitar very nicely and owned a company. He was younger than she was, with just a year down. They got letters every month in school, shed send them 1,500naira with a hand written letter. She told them she missed them, said she tried coming back but their Dad wont let her. Said he treated her like adust bin, thats the word she always used. They didnt know who to blame, so they blamed their Dad, as he never spoke about it. He often said Some things, youre too young to understand. Never seen a man so confused, couldnt fix break fast, lunch or dinner right for them. Why dont you just bring mummy back? They often yelled. But hed throw the spoons into the dish washer, shrug in frustration and leave the kitchen where the dinner table was placed and hurry to the room. They didnt know why he always did that. What was in his room; Why did he always run there? They were leaving town, she was going to miss them, so she hurried to their schools to ask their teachers how her kids were fairing. One of the teachers complained about one of them being absent minded during lectures, said almost like the little boys mind was else where. At a fast food restaurant she brought pictures from her purse, said their little sis just had her two year old birthday. She threw a party and they could see the pictures. A lot of relatives who normally visited them back then when she was around, where there, they hadnt seen those people in years anymore. They felt abandoned, their mum was having the time of her life without them. But they wouldnt tell her that, thats how they felt. So they left town, she cooked for her new husband in frustration. I dont know what my kids are eating or how theyre clothing, she often cried to him. He comforted her. So when they were big and slightly matured, one day he sent for them. They spent two weeks with their step Dad. Went swimming, grocery shopping and even sang while he played the guitar. They had the time of their life. She didnt want them to leave, but they did. She was alone again. The story was never about the boys, but about her. She had been lonely all her life, even before she met their father. Written by, Michael Ogah.
