Screaming Headless Torsos - Code Red review by MONK A band - TopicsExpress

Screaming Headless Torsos - Code Red review by MONK A band thats been around for a hot minute, dating back to 1996 or Further, but with a recent release that I was totally surprised with and had to download. Ive known about this band for a long time but this is the only release that Ive ever owned by them. Their fearless leader is the virtuoso guitarist David Fiuczynski, otherwise known as Fuze. He is a renowned guitarist & became known to me by his trademark whammy bar technique that is a style & sound that is all his own & some of that is featured on Code Red. The music is somewhat of an amalgamation of punk-jazz, funk & even metal, like Bad Brains connecting with Frank Zappa or P-Funk meets metal & even some jam band vibes that will interest the hippies reading this. It definitely is a sound that defies genre. Uniquely, the band employs two drummers who switch on & off, one of those being the great Skoota Warner who toured with Matisyahu before the Dub Trio came into the picture. I had the pleasure of seeing Matis with Skoota & snagging autographs from both at the end of the show. Having two dudes bangin the skins does pack plenty of punch, like a 1-2 jab to the abstract booty. The band also has a virtuoso in a percussionist by the name of Daniel Sedownick, who also played some shows with Matisyahu, some moments of those shows can be found on youtube, it makes Matis music even richer & its probably my favorite aspect of Screaming Headless Torsos & of this new release. That & the virtuoso guitar playing of course. Opening with a jazz metal face melter is the title track & that takes us to Brooce Swayne a funky number featuring Jimmy Valentine of Maroon 5 on guitar. The song actually has a Maroon 5 sort of vibe to it, that is the early Maroon 5, which was funky as a mug with sweat sugary guitar chops you could taste & an irresistible pop hook. The song also has some infectious high end vocals in the vein of Curtis Mayfield, sure to hook you in. After this is a song about iconic P-Funk keyboardist Bernie Worrell called Wizard of Woo & it features . . . . you guessed it, Bernie Worrell on keys, doin his other worldly, cosmic, funk thang (Fuze played & toured with Bernies Woo Warriors). The record continues on with those conga vibes I enjoy, a nice little conga heavy jam part in Dead Christmas Trees. A very original band playing some music that I heard quite a bit of in the underground of the 1990s but seems to be lost today. The Torsos stand alone in the pack & know how to play their instruments. Id really like to catch them live sometime. Ill leave you with an EPK of the new album. Dig it! https://youtube/watch?v=jM4ikyhw3zM
