Screening TOMORROW Nov 1st @ East Asian Cinematic Highlights (EACH) Ping Pong Written by Po-Chih Leong and Jerry Liu. Directed by Po-Chih Leong. Starring David Yip, Lucy Sheen, Robert Lee. A Chinese lawyer tries to execute the will of Sam Wong. Made for Channel 4 this was the first British feature film set in London’s Chinatown. British-born Po-Chih Leong had previously helped set up TVB in Hong Kong (still running today). He also went on to direct films starring the likes of Chow Yun Fat, John Lone and Jude Law. The film’s stars were David Yip (who had previously appeared on TV as The Chinese Detective) and Lucy Sheen, both of whom seemed to be part of a new breed of actors, of East Asian descent but very much “British”, that the industry at the time appeared to be willing to share a platform with. In fact this whole era did promise a bold new future where East Asians would take their place in mainstream British media relatively free of “orientalist baggage”. Somehow this brave new dawn failed to materialise. Ping Pong does though form a neat triumvirate (along with Sour Sweet and the later Peggy Su!) of British East Asian cinematic experience. The last two years have seen something of a groundswell of East Asian presence in the arts and it’s to be hoped that the recent success of Hong Khaou’s Lilting can yet herald a new era of Ping Pong’s. seaartsfest.org/east-asian-cinematic-highlights…/ Part of SEA Arts Fest Don’t miss an all too rare opportunity to see this iconic British East Asian film on a big screen!
